In this episode, I address a common and sensitive issue many CEOs face: managing the dynamics with an overly involved board chair.

They are often the same issues faced by any leader who feels disempowered when their manager is giving "instructions" directly to their team.

The question comes from a CEO of a startup in the health IT space, asking:

"The chair of our organisation is also a major shareholder but I was brought in to run the business. She is constantly involved in operational matters and "calls in" unannounced to chat with the staff anytime she wants. Is this normal?"

Over my 40-year career, I’ve identified three types of board members and how their involvement can vary. I’ll share insights into these types and provide strategies to establish clear communication, accountability, and authority to improve your relationship with the board and enhance your leadership effectiveness.
