Ruth Messinger - What's Jewish about Social Justice?

Описание: The Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies and Cornell United Religious Work continue their series, Faith, Hope, and Knowledge: Interfaith Dialogues for Global Justice and Peace, with a talk by Ruth W. Messinger, advisor on social justice in the Jewish community, outlining the Jewish obligation to work and advocate effectively for social justice.

Messinger is the Global Ambassador of American Jewish World Service, an international human rights and development organization which she ran from 1998-2016. She works to engage rabbis and interfaith leaders to work for global justice.

Messinger also does social justice work at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America and at the Jewish Community Center of Manhattan.

She is a member of the World Bank’s Moral Imperative Task Force to end extreme poverty, serves on various boards and holds honorary degrees from several seminaries. Previously, she had a 20-year career in public service in New York as a city council member, as Manhattan borough president, and as a candidate for mayor.

In 2015, Messinger was the recipient of the Julia Vadala Taft Outstanding Leadership Award. She was named one of the 10 most inspiring women religious leaders of 2012 by The Huffington Post; the sixth most influential Jew in the world by The Jerusalem Post; and was listed annually on The Forward’s “Forward 50” for nearly a decade.

The Faith, Hope, and Knowledge: Interfaith Dialogues for Global Justice and Peace series is supported by the Office of the Vice Provost for International Affairs as part of its strategic priority to promote global-at-home learning.
