The Japan–Sri Lanka Peace Pagoda at Nallathanniya stands as a monument to world peace and Buddhist unity, near the sacred mountain of Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak). It was built by the Japanese Buddhist organization Nipponzan-Myōhōji, founded by Most Venerable Nichidatsu Fujii (1885–1985), a disciple of Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of nonviolence.
After witnessing the horrors of World War II, Nichidatsu Fujii dedicated his life to building Peace Pagodas around the world. These pagodas are intended as symbols to inspire global peace and compassion, transcending nationality, religion, and race.
The Nallathanniya Peace Pagoda project began in the late 20th century, during a difficult period in Sri Lanka’s history marked by internal conflict. Building it near Adam’s Peak, a mountain sacred to multiple faiths (Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and Christians), was symbolic — the goal was to promote harmony among religions and to serve as a beacon for nonviolence.
The architecture of the pagoda follows the serene and simple style of traditional Japanese stupas: a white circular structure crowned with a golden pinnacle. Surrounding it are small statues and carvings of the Buddha in different postures, representing peace, meditation, and teaching.
Today, the Japan–Sri Lanka Peace Pagoda in Nallathanniya is a quiet, spiritually uplifting site visited by pilgrims climbing Adam’s Peak. It continues to symbolize not only the spiritual friendship between Japan and Sri Lanka, but also a global call for peaceful coexistence and mutual understanding among all people.
