I'm yet again restoring a clear coat blue on silver Majorette model, this time the 1978-1985 247 Porsche 924. I love the bright but simple colours used by Majorette in the 70s and 80s. This first came out in silver with black Porsche side tampos, then blue like my example with orange Porsche tampos, then green with white tampos, and finally orange for the longest run, again with white tampos. Interestingly, a short promotional run for the TV show Dallas had a black 924 with orange tampos.

My example's paint was in a shocking state. These metallic Majorettes are often have very thin paint which becomes flaky over time. This one had lost nearly all of the original blue, plus it also had patches of a darker blue overpaint. It looks far better after a full makeover. I also tried to recreate the side Porsche decals. Due to the design they needed printing on clear decal paper, and being an orange decal I knew it would not show up particularly well against the blue paint. Still, I am quite happy with the result.

The Porsche 924 was introduced in 1976 as a replacement for both the 912 and 914. It was originally a joint venture between Porsche and Volkswagen but VW pulled the plug on the project following the 1973 oil crisis. Porsche soldiered on as they needed to replace the now discontinued 914, though it was still built in VW's Neckarsulm factory as per the terms of the deal. Despite its two litre four cylinder engine providing underwhelming power, the entry level 924 proved a best seller. A later turbo variant solved many of these performance concerns. It was built up until 1988.
