We are facing a coup d’état; consequently, the State capital constitutes the fundamental strategic objective. It must be seized in the initial phase; if this is not achieved, the situation that develops will be uncertain.
In the Spanish case, three principal orders of reasons are present:
• Purely national considerations: Madrid was the capital of a highly centralized state—politically, economically, and culturally. Any event occurring in Madrid would have an immediate impact throughout the entire Spanish territory.
• International considerations: The Government of the Nation resides in Madrid. It is necessary to demonstrate to the world, rapidly, that the insurgents are the only organized force capable of providing the country with a stable legal order.
• From a military standpoint: Madrid is the hub of the communications system; once occupied, it would enable operations—if required—in any direction across the national territory. Madrid also hosts the most powerful military garrison on the Peninsula, the highest military command and administrative bodies, and command-and-control and logistical centers of all types.
