A “rusty” rove beetle (Ontholestes gracilis, family Staphylinidae) sneaked up on a greenbottle fly (unidentified, family Calliphoridae) as it licked a fresh dung of Japanese badgers (Meles anakuma, family Mustelidae) but failed to catch the agile prey. You can also see a larva of black-spotted carrion beetle (Oiceoptoma nigropunctatum, family Silphidae) crawling over the mucky dunghill. Meanwhile, a golden soldierfly (Ptecticus aurifer, family Stratiomyidae) was attracted to the stinky latrine and perched on the undergrowth nearby in the windbreaker forest of Japanese red-cedar (Cryptomeria japonica, family Cupressaceae). Captured in the cloudy early-afternoon (around 12:45 PM) of late-June 2023 in Japan.
