The JF-17 Deal: Why India Is Alarmed by Pakistan and Bangladesh’s Growing Military Ties

Pakistan and Bangladesh are in talks over a potential defence deal that could see Dhaka acquire JF-17 Thunder fighter jets, jointly developed by Pakistan and China. Discussions between the air force chiefs in Islamabad are being projected by Pakistan as part of its broader push to expand arms exports and boost strategic influence.

The timing is critical. These talks come months after the ouster of Sheikh Hasina in August 2024, an event that sharply strained Bangladesh’s relations with India. Since then, Dhaka has resumed direct trade with Pakistan for the first time since 1971 and stepped up military engagement, signalling a clear geopolitical shift.

For India, the concerns are threefold. First is China’s growing footprint, as the JF-17 brings Chinese-linked military hardware closer to India’s eastern flank. Second is the dilution of India’s long-standing influence in Bangladesh, even if the jets do not drastically alter regional air power. Third is political uncertainty, with Bangladesh heading into elections under an interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.

For Pakistan, the move is about money, messaging, and relevance. For India, it is a warning that Bangladesh can no longer be taken for granted as a strategic partner.
