In 1933, the Soviet Union faced a massive famine, and Stalin’s regime had little sympathy for “undesirables” like petty criminals, homeless people, and political troublemakers. Thousands of them were rounded up and dumped on an uninhabited island in Siberia’s Ob River, without food, shelter, or tools.
Within days, desperation set in. People ate grass, bark, leather… and eventually, each other. Guards stood by, doing little, while the camp descended into chaos. Survivors would later call it “Cannibal Island,” a grim reminder of how far human cruelty and neglect could go.
