In Nigeria, the story of Mammy Market is deeply tied to the life of soldiers, their families, and the spirit of survival.
Many years ago, inside military barracks across the country, life was not easy. Soldiers were often posted far from home, and their salaries were small. Their wives, mothers, and sisters had to find ways to support their families. So, they began to cook food, sell provisions, and trade small items from their rooms or under makeshift sheds.
Every morning, smoke from firewood and kerosene stoves filled the air. Women prepared rice, beans, yam, and soup. Others arranged sachet water, bread, soap, and toiletries on wooden tables. Soldiers returning from drills or night duty would stop by to eat, buy what they needed, and rest. Because most of these traders were “mammies” (mothers or wives), people started calling the area “Mammy Market.”
