¡Composting Gowanus! a program of the Gowanus Canal Conservancy promoting composting in the Gowanus Canal watershed. Our dedicated volunteers assist in making a greener NYC. This work saves the city money by reducing shipping costs that send organic wastes to landfills.
Food scraps that breakdown anaerobically in landfills create a greenhouse gas, methane, which if allowed into the atmosphere is 20 times as potent as CO2. By composting food scraps locally we produce rich soil amendment desperately needed for nutrient drained urban landscapes, resulting in healthier soil and plants -all without the methane (composting is an aerobic process). A healthy plant community with rich soil is better equipped to handle disease, drought and severe cold - prolonging the life expectancy of trees and plants means further savings for the city! Composting locally is a win/win!
