Описание: The Budumburum Liberian Refugee Camp in Ghana is due to close on June 30th. Refugees are now returning to Liberia with the assistance of the UNHCR. The problem on the camp is that there are more than 3,500 refugees without ID cards. They are stuck in the camp. They have no assistance to return home. Some of them have been on the camp since 1990. The UNHCR said that they will not be issuing any more cards. They issued 43,000 in June 2003. The Liberians I spoke to said that the UNHCR said they would come back to issue the rest but they never came. The non-ID card holders will now be illiegal, without any security and are afraid of what is going to happen to them. The land owners want their land back but the Liberians have nowhere to go. They want to go back home but do not have the means to do so. They need help.The UNHCR were not willing to release any information to me about why the remaining 3,500 people have not been issued cards and so this is not a conclusive report. I am posting it because I think it is an urgent matter and needs attention and further investigation.
