Rockhounding for Obsidian & Chalcedony in the Jemez Mountains - Part 2 - Finding Sources!

Описание: This is another obsidian and chalcedony rockhound video filmed in the Jemez Mountains in October 2020. This time I identify source rocks for both the obsidian and the chalcedony nodules. This is a gorgeous place to rockhound in the summer in New Mexico!

To get to the Borrego Canyon stream bed, take Forest Service road 266 from the Paliza Campground. Turn right at the 137/DP-10 junction. Follow this road all the way until the junction where 137 splits off to the right, where there is a small sign. Stay left. The road crosses a streambed almost immediately. This is the arroyo featured in the first part of the video. Go up and down stream from this location to find the obsidian nuggets.

Other areas featured in this video can be found by continuing on 492 for some miles, and also on DP-80. Please do NOT go any further than the Borrego Canyon arroyo unless you have a 4WD high clearance vehicle.

We have seen a bear with cubs, an elk stag, cows and wild horses out there. The more remote areas are full of bear scat - make noise and be very aware of your surroundings if you venture out there. Also, the Forest Service closes the access to the area during winter. Hopefully the roads will open in the Spring of 2021.
