A video dedicated to the short-lived rise and fall of Rex's push into the jet market, acquiring ex-Virgin Australia 737s to connect major cities in Australia, starting with Melbourne and Sydney before spreading out to Adelaide and beyond.
It seemed like a good thing, with competitive prices, great service and a frequent flyer program revamp in the wind. But, come 2023 there were rumblings of issues behind the scenes and suddenly the jet operations ceased and we went back to Virgin and Qantas ruling the skies again.
It's ironic that Rex would take ex-Virgin 737's for their operations, only to hand them back again after their attempt to compete. Even moreso that the 737 wearing the registration VH-REX now wears Virgin Australia colours.
I had the chance to fly aboard their inaugural Sydney to Melbourne service, and again on the same route in the exact same aircraft a little later. It's a shame it wasn't sustainable, but thankfully Rex, or Regional Express continues to serve its original brief - regional flights with their Saab 340 turboprops.
