Located in the valley of the Hindukush and a two-hour drive from Chitral city, Chitral Gol National is home to a wide array of fauna and flora. The park is densely covered with lush green cedar trees as well as Blue Pine, Fir, and Birch trees. The park has the world’s largest population of Kashmir Markhor (a kind of mountain goat). The park also has small numbers of Siberian Ibex, Ladakh Urial, and Asian Black Bear. The snow leopard has also been seen in the park. Some other animals commonly found in Chitral Gol Park are Tibetan wolf, red fox, yellow-throated marten, and Himalayan otters. The park also has an amazing collection of birds including bearded vulture, Himalayan vulture, golden eagle, demoiselle crane, peregrine falcon, snow partridge, and rock partridge.
WHERE TREES ARE AWE INSPIRING
Whilst driving on the way to the top you can’t miss the magnificent 300-year-old Deodar Cedar tree named Chaghbini by the locals. According to the locals the name Chaghbini means ‘resting under the shade’ in the local language, Khowar, and can be traced back to a time when local labourers used to bring snow from the mountain top to the Chitral city and would rest under the shade of this huge Deodar tree on the way.
The park is a popular destination for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and wildlife enthusiasts due to its diverse landscape.
Chitral Gol National Park was established in 1984 with the aim of protecting the natural habitat of the area’s unique wildlife and plant species. The park was declared a protected area under the Pakistan Wildlife (Protection) Ordinance, 1979. It is now recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve due to its significance in preserving biodiversity.
