Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has strongly criticised the European Union’s proposed 20th sanctions package against Russia, warning it would seriously undermine Hungary’s energy security.
Speaking on Hungarian radio, Szijjarto accused the EU of pursuing what he called “fanaticism for war and sanctions,” arguing that targeting Russian energy firms such as Gazprom, Rosatom, and Lukoil would threaten Hungary’s sovereignty and raise household energy costs.
Budapest has vowed to block any EU measures that would restrict Russian oil, gas, or nuclear cooperation, saying it remains heavily dependent on pipeline supplies and fuel for the Paks nuclear power plant. The sanctions package, which still requires unanimous approval from all 27 EU member states, also includes plans to tighten controls on Russia’s so-called shadow oil fleet.
The Kremlin has condemned EU sanctions as illegal and warned they could backfire on European economies.
