The Isle of Wight - the Needles - Carisbrooke - St. Catherine's

Описание: The Needles are the amazing formations on the west end of the Isle of Wight, reaching around 400 m into the sea. When we were there the winds were crazy, no chance of flying a stabilized drone but the Nazgul Evoque sliced the air nicely - with quite a bit of roll to stop it drifting away.
Carisbrooke Castle was built from 1101 and added to even in 1588 when the Spanish Armada threatened British shores. King Charles I was imprisoned here. Two attempts to flee failed, one because he was too fat for the window... Can't have been too unpleasant for him there - the bowling green was built for the prisoner...
St. Catherine's Oratory was built by the Lord of Chale as penance for stealing the wine from a ship wreck that belonged to the church. The tower is the only remaining part of the church.

Die Needles sind die herrliche Formation von Kalkstein, der etwa 400 m vom Westen der Isle of Wight ins Meer reicht. Keine Chance, bei dem Wind eine stabilisierte Drohne zu fliegen, aber die Nazgul ließ sich nicht beirren, solange man sie schräg genug in den Wind gestellt hat.
Bereits im 7. Jh. soll bei Carisbrooke eine sächsische Siedlung gewesen sein. Ab 1101 baute man die Blendwand und den Keep. Nachdem die spanische Armada beängstigend nah an dem Castle vorbeikam, errichtete man um 1588 Artillerieplattformen. 1647 wurde Charles I. hier für zehn Monate eingesperrt bzw. recht komfortabel untergebracht. Zwei Fluchtversuche blieben erfolglos, unter anderem weil er zu dick für die Fenster war. Das Bowling Green wurde für den Gefangenen angelegt!
St. Catherine's Oratory wird auch Pepper Pot genannt. Der Turm ist alles, was von einer kleinen Kirche von etwa 1328 übrig blieb. Laut der Legende nahm der Lord of Chale Wein aus einem Schiff, das in Chale Bay auf Grund lief und von einem Kloster stammte. Der Lord wurde mit einer Geldstrafe belegt und wäre exkommuniziert worden, wenn er nicht eine Kirche mit Leuchtturm hier gebaut hätte.
