In today's video we are in the Valley Of The Kings in Egypt, where Egyptian mummies and tombs lay hidden for centuries. The most famous of all is the King Tutankhamun's tomb (known as KV620.

Tutankhamun's tomb (KV62) is located in the Valley of the Kings, on the west bank of the Nile River near Luxor, Egypt, hidden for millennia until discovered by Howard Carter in 1922. While most of the famous treasures are in museums, the actual tomb of Tutankhamun, with its burial chamber and mummy, is still in the Valley and accessible to visitors for a special ticket.

The tomb of Tutankhamun, also known by its official designation KV62, is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world. Despite the pharaoh being a relatively minor figure in ancient history, the discovery of his nearly intact resting place in 1922 by Howard Carter made him a global icon.

The tomb is located in the Valley of the Kings, a royal necropolis on the west bank of the Nile, near the modern city of Luxor in Egypt. It is uniquely positioned lower in the valley floor than many other royal tombs, which is likely why it remained hidden under debris and protected from grave robbers for over 3,000 years.

While the tomb is smaller and more modest than those of other pharaohs—likely due to Tutankhamun’s sudden death at age 18 or 19—it was packed with over 5,000 artifacts.

The Mummy: Tutankhamun’s mummy remains inside the tomb today, housed in a climate-controlled glass case.

The Sarcophagus:The original stone sarcophagus and one of the gilded wooden coffins are still in the burial chamber.

Treasures (Historical):At the time of discovery, Tutankhamun's tomb contained gold chariots, jewelry, statues, weapons, furniture, and the iconic solid gold death mask.

Murals:The walls of the burial chamber are decorated with vibrant paintings depicting the pharaoh's journey to the afterlife and scenes from his funeral.

Most of the portable treasures, including the gold mask, have been moved to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo and are being transitioned to the new Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza.

Visiting Tutankhamun's Tomb
It is indeed possible to visit Tutankhamun's tomb in person. Because of its popularity and the need to preserve the delicate environment inside, there are a few things to keep in mind:

Tickets:Entry to KV62 usually requires a separate ticket from the general Valley of the Kings pass. As of early 2026, the cost is approximately 700 EGP.

Exhibits: While Tutankhamun's tomb itself offers the experience of seeing the mummy and the chamber, you should visit the museums in Cairo or Giza to see the full collection of gold and artifacts.

Replica: To help preserve the original site, an exact, high-detail replica of the tomb was built near Howard Carter’s house at the entrance to the Valley of the Kings, which is also open to the public.

Tutankhamun: This is the standard version used by most historians and museums.

Tutankhamen: A very common older spelling often found in 20th-century literature.

Tutankhamon: A version that reflects a different interpretation of the final vowel.
