Mike Africa Jr. was born in prison in 1978. He's spent 40 years fighting for the release of his parents, Debbie and Mike Sr, who are members of the MOVE organization and were unjustly incarcerated along with 7 others in 1978 following a televised siege at their home in West Philadelphia.
Many people are unaware that in 1985, Philadelphia police dropped a bomb on the home of the remaining MOVE family members, killing 11 people including 5 children and destroying 61 homes. No city official was ever held accountable for this act of terror. More than half of the block remains condemned to this day, a constant reminder of the City's violence and neglect.
In late 2018, both Debbie and Mike Sr. were released on parole. This is their story, told for the first time ever in public last week at Rowan University. I was on hand to document the entire 2 hour talk.
