After the screws are driven into the composite board, matching deck plugs are inserted into pre-drilled pockets. Most plugs are cut from the same board material, allowing grain direction and color to blend into the surrounding surface.

The plug diameter typically matches a screw recess of about 9–12 mm, covering the fastener without affecting the load path below. Once seated, hundreds of visible screw heads can effectively disappear across a single deck installation.

What looks like a cosmetic step is also a lesson in construction sequencing. The structure is secured first, then the surface is visually restored so strength and appearance no longer compete with each other.

Many building details succeed not because they add material, but because they remove visual distractions from the finished work.
