The Dalton gang were the last real outlaws of the wild west era. I read several books and articles about them, and I found the story absolutely fascinating. They had links to the James /Younger gang, and Bob Dalton's declaration that he would "beat anything Jesse James ever did—rob two banks at once, in broad daylight." which they tried on October 5, 1892 just about sums up the sheer audacity these outlaws had. They met their demise because technology caught up to them. Specifically the humble telegram. A Marshal in a neighbouring town was able to send a message ahead to Coffeyville in Kansas , he guessed which bank they were about to rob, ( nobody guessed it was two !) and they had an armed posse ready and waiting. That much is agreed upon, but what happened next is something of a myth, I researched the original newspaper articles released that day and in the following few, along with eye witness reports, and some of what they say conflicts with the official historians narrative, now dont forget, the victors often write their own history, Im not sure was this because they wanted to hide the brutality of what took place, I should mention some of those shooting from the windows weren't even deputised. Some say one of the gang got away with a bag of money and some say he didn't. It doesn't really matter now, as its all history, but who cares, it still makes a great story and the end of one of the most fascinating and most loved era's in modern history. I include the photos of the Daltons, the actual bank complete with its bullet riddled front doors and windows, the town square and ofc the aftermath with the outlaws laid out in repose. Its as close as I can get you to heat of the battle. Hope I captured the spirit of the event in the tune, enjoy.
