Title: Unveiling Lunar Secrets: Advances in Passive Microwave and Ground Penetrating Radar Observation
Speaker: Jianqing Feng (Applicant)
Abstract:
Microwave detection holds great potential for unraveling the enigmas of planetary subsurface regions, utilizing both passive and active methodologies. In the realm of passive exploration, I will discuss how we reconcile Chang'E-2 microwave radiometer data and LRO Diviner infrared data, enabling us to reconstruct global dielectric properties, lunar subsurface temperatures, and identify regions of high heat flux. Shifting our focus to active investigations, we examine the ground penetrating radar (GPR) data collected by the Chang’E-4 rover along a traverse exceeding 1 kilometer. From this dataset, we unveil the latest insights into the structure of the Moon's upper several hundred meters within the South Pole-Aitken region. Additionally, we have estimated the Moon's dielectric properties using GPR signals, comparing them with measurements from Apollo samples and passive microwave observations. These advancements deepen our understanding of lunar subsurface characteristics and shed light on the mysteries of our celestial neighbor.

The Planetary Science Institute is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation dedicated to Solar System exploration. It is headquartered in Tucson, AZ, where it was founded in 1972. In 2016 PSI established a second office in Lakewood, CO (near Denver).
PSI scientists and educators are involved in numerous NASA and international missions, the study of Mars, Earth, and other planets, the Moon, asteroids, comets, interplanetary dust, impact physics, the origin of the solar system, extrasolar planet formation, dynamics, the rise of life, and other areas of research. They conduct fieldwork on all continents of the Earth to understand our planet and others. They are also actively involved around the world in science education and public outreach through school programs, children's books, popular science books, podcasts, and art.
