Speaker: Professor Sir Stephen O’Rahilly,
Professor of Clinical Biochemistry and Medicine and Director of the MRC Metabolic Diseases Unit, University of Cambridge; Honorary Consultant Physician at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge, UK
Educational objectives:
•Learn about the importance of the hypothalamus in the control of human appetite.
•Better understand the role of genetic factors in obesity.
•Understand how the health of adipose tissue determines the extent to which whether chronicovernutrition has adverse consequences.
Biosketch of Professor Sir Stephen O’Rahilly:
Professor Sir Stephen O'Rahilly is Professor of Clinical Biochemistry and Medicine, Director of the MRC Metabolic Diseases Unit, University of Cambridge, and an Honorary Consultant Physician, Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge, UK. Dr. O'Rahilly received his MBBCh and MD at the National University of Ireland, then trained in clinical medicine in Dublin and London at St. Bartholomew and Hammersmith Hospitals. His specialty and research training in Diabetes and Endocrinology followed at the University of Oxford and Harvard. Over the past 30 years, Professor O'Rahilly has made major contributions to research in the field of diabetes and obesity and to our understanding of energy metabolism and satiety. His work, beginning with insulin resistance and signaling and then on the genetics and functional genomics of obesity in human subjects has transformed our knowledge of the molecular mechanisms of metabolic diseases and impacted therapeutic approaches. His work has been published in over 500 articles (H-index 215). In addition, Professor O'Rahilly has served as consultant to governments, research agencies and foundations and industry, and has mentored well over 100 trainees. These incredible achievements have been recognized by numerous awards that cannot all be listed here (see Wikipedia). A few include, Fellowship in the Royal Society, Foreign membership in the American Association of Physicians, Foreign associate of the National Academy of Sciences USA, the Rolf Luft award of the Karolinska Institute, the Clinical Investigator award of the Endocrine Society, the Dale Medal of the Society for Endocrinology, the Novo Nordisk Diabetes Prize from the European Society for the Study of Diabetes, the Helmholtz Diabetes Award (Germany), the Banting Medal of the American Diabetes Association and the Manpei Suzuki International Prize for Diabetes Research (Japan) and the Croonian Medal of the Royal Society. Sir O'Rahilly was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2013. The McGill Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism is delighted to welcome Professor O'Rahilly to McGill and the MUHC to deliver the 2025 McGill Novo Nordisk Lecture.
