This week, hosts Jersey Ed & Mike the Podfather invite you to join them for a virtual AA meeting! The guys frequently reference the Alcoholics Anonymous & Narcotics Anonymous programs in the show and how they both personally benefit from participation. For this show, we thought it would be valuable to host a virtual meeting to share what it’s all about.
Reminder! The Friends in Recovery Community of Support currently hosts monthly meetings in Palm Springs, Florida and Voorhees, New Jersey. New events are coming soon in Newtown, Connecticut, Lowell, Massachusetts, and Richmond, Virginia. Follow us on Facebook for updates!

Let’s start with the AA Preamble:
Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.
The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for A.A. membership; we are selfs supporting through our own contributions. A.A. is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.
AA’s 12-Step approach follows a set of guidelines designed as “steps” toward recovery, and members can revisit these steps at any time. The 12 Steps are:9
1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.
2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
Your Higher Power does not need to be “God,” as defined by someone else. It works if you work it. The program is not based on intelligence, it’s based on heart. The benefits you reap will come from the effort you put in. In a meeting, it’s okay to be yourself. It’s okay not to be okay - and you don’t need to feel guilt or shame because of it.
Serenity Prayer:
God, grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.
