SS SULTANA - THEY SURVIVED THE WAR, BUT DIED GOING HOME
April 27th, 1865. The SS Sultana - a steamboat designed for 376 people - is loaded with 2,400 passengers.
Most of them are Union soldiers. Prisoners of war who survived the Civil War and are finally going home.
The war just ended two weeks ago. They survived Confederate prison camps - Andersonville, Cahaba - hellholes where thousands died of disease, starvation, and abuse.
They survived all of that. Now they're just days from home. From their families. From freedom.
At 2:00 AM, the Sultana's boilers explode. The steamboat erupts in flames and sinks.
1,800 people die. More than died on the Titanic.
