The Silk Road, where exchange of the Eastern and Western civilizations took place 2,000 years ago. The road is now a railway! Arirang TV is launching a special documentary series on the 21st Iron Silk Road, filmed in 13 cities of South Korea, China and North Korea. Ep.3 'The Road to Peace' focuses on the Iron Silk Road, which used to be tainted with the greed of the imperialistic powers, and the history of Korean and Chinese struggles dating back to a century ago.

Interestingly, the composer is not Chinese—he is a Korean named Jeong Yul-seong, the godfather of Chinese revolutionary music and one of the three best revolutionary musicians in China. Why did he go to China? In the early 20th century, many young Koreans left to China to participate in the independence movement and escape the suppression. Jeong, who lived in Gwangju, Jeollanam-do Province, Korea, was one of them. He headed for China in 1933 to participate in the anti-Japanese movement and composed many famous pieces.

Independence activists in China established the provisional government in Shanghai, one of the concession areas of foreign powers. Here, an event that enhanced the government's prestige occurred—the patriotic death of Yun Bong-gil. Yun threw a bomb disguised as a water canteen in the middle of the celebration of a victory day and birthday of the Japanese emperor held at Lu Xun Park. The resulting explosion killed and injured 7 high-rank officers of the Japanese army. The Chinese press at the time widely reported the incident to inform the international society of the atrocities of Japan and appeal for support for Korea.

The early 20th century, when the invasions of foreign powers were growing in intensity for territorial expansion. The railway served as a means of exploitation and invasion but also as the road of struggle for peace. The patriotic death of An Jung-geun at Harbin Station also greatly inspired the Chinese people. In celebrating the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Korean provisional government, let's look back on the past 100 years and into the future 100 years of the Iron Silk Road.

2000년 전 동서양의 문명이 오갔던 실크로드. 그 길을 이제는 열차가 달린다! 아리랑국제방송에서는 한국, 중국, 북한 13개 도시를 취재, 21세기 철의 실크로드에 대한 특집 다큐멘터리를 제작하였다. 3부 '평화를 향한 길'에서는 제국주의 열강의 탐욕으로 얼룩졌던 철의 실크로드와 이를 저지하기 위해 협력했던 한국과 중국의 100년 전 투쟁의 역사를 다룬다.

상해 루쉰공원에서 합창을 하는 사람들. 중국인민해방군 군가다. 중국인들이 어려서부터 배우고 자랑스러워하는 노래. 그런데 작곡가는 중국인이 아닌 한국인 정율성이다. 중국 혁명음악의 대부이자 3대 음악가로 꼽히는 작곡가 정율성. 그는 왜 중국으로 갔을까? 20세기 초 한국의 젊은이들은 일본 제국주의의 탄압이 심해지자 독립운동을 위해 중국으로 넘어갔다. 전라남도 광주에 살던 정율성도 그 중의 한 명. 1933년 중국으로 가서 항일운동을 하며 많은 곡들을 작곡했다.

중국의 독립운동가들은 당시 열강들의 조계지였던 상해에 임시정부를 세웠는데, 임시정부의 위상을 높인 사건이 발생한다. 윤봉길 의사의 의거. 루쉰공원에서 열린 일본의 전승축하기념식이자 일왕 생일경축식에 윤봉길 의사가 수통폭탄을 투척해, 주요 관리 7명이 사상했다. 당시 중국 언론들은 이 사건을 대대적으로 다루면서 국제사회에 일본 제국주의 만행을 알리고 한국 지지를 호소했다.

영토 확장을 위한 열강의 침략이 기승을 부렸던 20세기 초. 철도는 수탈과 침략의 수단이기도 했지만 평화를 위한 투쟁의 길이기도 했다. 하얼빈역에서 발생한 안중근 의사의 의거는 중국인들에게도 큰 영감을 주었다. 대한민국 임시정부 100년을 맞아, 철의 실크로드가 지나온 100년을 돌아보고 나아갈 100년을 전망한다.
