Dale starts by telling us about his early years and what attracted him to draft horses and mules as a child.He then worked for Oasis in Bird-in-Hand and learned much about soil and the fertility of the land.

He talks about farmers now selling direct to consumers ad local businesses and how that is helping farmers. Lancaster, PA is very close to cities with populations over 1,000,000 and that farmers should be looking at ways to take advantage of that proximity as people are more interested in where their food comes from than in the past. Take advantage of the farm to table movement.
Also how the dairy industry has custom operators taking up Amish Farms as the farmers turn to other modes of employment to make money.

Dale talks at length about the history of Horse Progress Days starting with Elmer Lapp and his farm. Dale got involved in the second year the event was held in Lancaster (1998) and worked with Floyd Bontrager to formally set up the organization. He is always surprised by the growth of the event, and the increase in International presence. He feels these relationships across cultures and countries is what is very important for our future, not just in terms of farming. He talks about who the event is targeted to - people still interested in farming with draft animal power - not just tourists.

The main emphasis of HPD is to demonstrate new innovation animal powered equipment NOT old time farming ways.

Dale also talks about the future of small farms and draft animal power...will it continue? Can it be profitable? Can one be more content in a live spent farming this way?
