Moments ago in Cologne, Germany, at the Lanxess Arena before 19,000 fans strong, WBC world heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (42-2, 39 KOs) made quick work of previously unbeaten Cuban amateur star Odlanier Solis (17-1, 12 KOs), knocking him out in the first round of a scheduled twelve-round bout. The time was 3:00 at the time of the stoppage.
In what was mostly a feeling out round, Vitali Klitschko stalked his opponent and landed a few punches, none of which seemed to do any damage. For his part, Odlanier Solis used good movement and faster hands to land a couple counter right hands to the champion's face.
Then during the closing seconds of the round, Solis led with a one-two, left-right combination, coming up empty, but was countered with a glancing right hook to the top of his head.
The left leg of Solis seemed to stiffen and slip forward a little before he leaned backwards onto his right leg and fell to the canvas. Although the Cuban beat the referee's count of ten, he appeared to have suffered some kind of injury to one of his legs and could not continue.
It was a very disappointing end to a heavyweight match up that some thought may finally give one of the Klitschko brothers a bit of a problem but in the end, it was not meant to be.
What made the event even more disappointing was the fact this was the first foray into the sport of boxing for premium cable channel EPIX, and one must wonder if the people in charge at the network will ever want to purchase the broadcast rights to another fight again.
Up next for Vitali Klitschko could be WBA world heavyweight titleholder David Haye this summer or contender Tomasz Adamek sometime in the fall. He would be a heavy favorite to defeat either man.
