We got into everything—her deep connection and devotion to Lee Daniels, how she tried to self-sabotage her breakout role as Billie Holiday, why she feels the characters she plays become part of her DNA, and what it was like working with screen legends Glenn Close, Mo'Nique, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor on her new Netflix film, The Deliverance.
