On the neutral station Aegis-9, the arrival of a Kaelith usually means a death sentence. When Rhynax, the galaxy's most feared shadow-operative, collapses in the main concourse, the station goes into a lockdown of pure terror. Paul Weaver, a human ex-combat medic, is the only one who doesn't run. He realizes she isn't attacking; she’s drowning in the collective trauma of her own victims. He drags her to his med-bay, shuts the door on the terrified galactic authorities, and proceeds to apply "primitive" human comforts—physical weight, regulated temperature, and calm, rhythmic speech—to stabilize a being that can walk through walls.
