Live performance from the United Center in Idaho Springs, CO. Written by Jon Wirtz, featuring Joy Adams on cello. "Mamihlapinatapai" is a Yaghan (Tierra del Fuego) word for a shared, unspoken look between two people who both desire something but are reluctant to be the one to initiate it. It is considered one of the most succinct and difficult-to-translate words in the world. A literal translation suggests "to make each other feel awkward."
Meaning: The look is full of unspoken understanding, where each person wishes the other would take the first step toward something they both want but are hesitant to start. It can describe romantic situations like wanting to kiss but waiting for the other person to make a move, or other scenarios like wanting to leave a party but not wanting to be the first to suggest it.
