In Zambia, young people make up about 20% of the population, yet they account for nearly 40% of new HIV infections. Almost 1 in 3 girls has been pregnant by the age of 19 and has experienced physical violence the age of 15. These realities highlight the need to support young people with the right information, services, and safe environments.
As part of its work, the Strengthening Girls’ Rights! Reproductive Health and HIV Prevention for Young Women and Girls in Zambia II project funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) engages religious and traditional leaders through community dialogues. These conversations promote positive change by challenging harmful norms and raising awareness about the “triple threat” of HIV, teenage pregnancy, and gender-based violence, helping to create healthier and safer futures for young people.
Today, many of these leaders are putting their knowledge into action. See how some are using sport as a way to connect with young people, share positive messages, and inspire change in their communities.
