Did you know the Germans had a plan to invade Spain? That plan was named Operation Felix. Its main goal was to seize Gibraltar which was owned by the British. The plan was not meant to defeat the Spanish army. The idea was that the Germans and Spanish forces would unite and fight against the British. Two German army corps would enter Spain across the Pyrenees. One corp was to go for Gibraltar, the other was to secure the flanks. If nececary Portugal was to be attacked as well.
Other German plans were drafted later, but all abandoned. German submarines were re-provisioning in Spain during the war. The Spanish secret service shared information with the Germans. The British were not sitting idle. British ambassador to Spain Sir Samuel Hoare bribed Spanish generals. And Britain kept a large amount of combat resources to rush into action if either Germany invaded the country or if Spain would chose the side of the Axis.
