New age musical face off that celebrates Melody, Rhythm and the Tempo of Indian classical music!
This is part of a three-part series, where musical duels between the Sitar and the iPad occupies center stage. This piece sets off from a base Hindustani Bandish in raga Madhuvanti set to Teental. Raga improvisations on the Sitar are in Hindustani Madhuvanti, and on the iPad in Carnatic Dharmavati. The mellifluous flow of ragas are played to different sets of pre-programmed beats, rather than a traditional Tabla, giving this classical piece a whole ‘new age’ feel. The Laya, or tempo of the performance, shifts in a measured manner from ‘madhya” or medium to “Dhrut” or fast. At the same time emphasis on melody comes from the initial Alaap as well as during the raga improvisations. The piece comes to a close after a sparkling “Sawal Jawab” between the artists.
In this unconventional, yet classical, duet of the Sitar and iPad, Shailesh Venkatraman and Mahesh Raghvan bring together a number of creative musical ideas to seamlessly blend Hindustani and Carnatic ragas, blending also Indian classical notes with new age pre-programmed beats.
