Yadgiri, also known as "Yadavagiri" by the locals, was once the capital of the Yadava Kingdom. It has a rich historical and cultural heritage. The Yadavas, the earliest Muslim empire of South India, chose Yadgiri as their capital and ruled from here between 1347 and 1425 A.D. While ancient inscriptions mention it as Yadgiri, it is popularly known as "Yadavagiri" among the locals. The Yadgiri district has deep roots in history, with famous dynasties such as the Satavahans, the Chalukyas of Badami, the Rastrkuta, Shahis, the Aidil Shahis, and the Nizam Shahis having ruled over the district.
In 1504, Yadgiri (Gulbarga) was permanently annexed to the Adil Shahi kingdom of Bijapur. With the invasion of Mir Jumla in 1657, it came under the control of the Mughals. Later, with the establishment of the Asaf Jahi (Nizam) Dynasty of Hyderabad (1724 – 1948), Yadgir and Gulbarga became a part of it. In 1863, when the Nizam Government formed Jillabandi, Surpur (Shorapur) became the district headquarters, with Gulbarga being one of the nine talukas. In 1873, Gulbarga was formed into a separate district with seven taluks. With the reorganization of states in 1956, Gulbarga became a part of Karnataka State and a divisional headquarters. (Yadgiri is one of the talukas under Gulbarga district)
The Bahamani rulers built the city of Gulbarga with palaces, mosques, gumbazs, bazaars, and other public buildings. There are numerous large and small marques and darghas in Gulbarga. The city is often described as a "Garden of Gumbazs." Additionally, there are several temples, churches, and other religious centers spread throughout the city. (In Yadgiri, the Yadava dynasty fort is situated in the middle of the hill.)
The Jumma Masjid, a remarkable monument in Gulbarga, is well-preserved within the fort. It is often compared to the famous mosque in Cordova, Spain. This mosque covers an area of 38,016 square feet, measuring 216 feet east-west and 176 feet north-south. It is the only mosque in India that is completely covered. Fergusson describes it as one of the most unique and remarkable mosques in India.
Yadgiri district, although the second smallest in the state, is culturally rich. The district is known for its vast expanse of fertile black soil, which yields bumper crops of red gram and jawar. It is often referred to as the "Daal bowl" of the state. Additionally, Yadgiri is famous for its cluster of cement industries and a distinct stone called "Malakheda Stone."
Yadgiri is blessed with the continuous flow of two main rivers, Krishna and Bhima, along with several tributaries. The district is also witnessing significant growth in various industries, including cement, textile, leather, and chemical production. A recent development that the people of Yadgiri take pride in is the establishment of an Agriculture University in Bheemarayana Gudi (B.Gudi).
On September 26, 2008, during a cabinet meeting held in Gulbarga, it was decided that Yadgiri would become a new district. The Hon'ble Chief Minister officially declared Yadgiri as a new district, and an IAS officer was appointed as the Special Officer for Yadgiri until the final notification was published in the Karnataka Gazette.
Finally, on December 26, 2009, the government issued a Gazette Notification officially declaring Yadgiri as the 30th new district of Karnataka State. The Yadgiri district came into existence on December 30, 2009, following the publication of the final notification.
