The Fraass breaking point test involves a thin strip of a bitumen sample, typically 30 to 40 mm long and 6 mm wide, which is cooled at a controlled rate. A steel stylus with a specified shape and weight is placed on the surface of the bitumen strip. As the temperature decreases, the bitumen becomes progressively stiffer. At a certain temperature, the bitumen loses its ability to support the weight of the stylus, causing a fracture or break in the film.
The temperature at which this fracture occurs is known as the Fraass breaking point. It is recorded as the lowest temperature at which the bitumen film breaks completely across the width of the strip. The test is typically conducted according to the ASTM D113 standard or other equivalent methods.
The Fraass breaking point provides an indication of the bitumen's brittleness and its ability to withstand low temperatures without cracking. Bitumen with a lower breaking point indicates that it becomes stiff and susceptible to cracking at higher temperatures, making it less suitable for use in cold climate regions. On the other hand, bitumen with a higher breaking point indicates better low-temperature performance and greater resistance to cracking.
