The skin may appear dusky or grayish at first, but quickly turns pink as the baby starts breathing�.Physical FeaturesThe head is large, with soft spots (fontanels) that will close over time—usually the anterior fontanel by 12–18 months and the posterior by about 6 months���.The shoulders and hips are wide, and the abdomen may protrude slightly�.Arms and legs are relatively long compared to the rest of the body�.The ears may be soft and folded, and the eyes may be swollen for the first few days��.The umbilical cord is bluish-white and will dry up and fall off within about 3 weeks�.The skin may be covered with a white, waxy substance called vernix caseosa, which protects the baby in the womb�.
