I came across Instagram posts and TikTok videos with a music track featuring a beautiful instrumental and a proverb ("Only when the last tree has been cut down [...]"). Sometimes, these posts included images from "The Lorax." I immediately tried to find a longer version on YouTube but couldn't find one. So, I started searching separately for the instrumental and the proverb to assemble them myself.
Here's what I found:


For the instrumental,
I used the Shazam app on my phone, which initially gave me three results for a track called "Dusable Dr" (another lesser-known track that uses the same proverb), but eventually provided a conclusive result: "Gangster Pain." The problem was that, although the track was great, I wanted a version without vocals. In the comments for that track, I discovered that the instrumental had also been used for a song by Notorious B.I.G. called "S*icidal Thoughts" (specifically, the Nuck Chorris remix, as the original version uses a different instrumental). Fortunately, there's an instrumental version of that song on YouTube, which is perfect for what I want to create.
However, "Dusable Dr" and "S*icidal Thoughts" are not what I usually listen to, yet they sounded familiar to me. Eventually, I realized that the instrumental samples from The Crown Heights Affair's track "Feeling Tall," which has been used by other artists like Britney Spears in "Untitled Lullaby/Baby Boy" and a cool rap group from my country, France, called IAM, in "Un cri court dans la nuit." "Feeling Tall" has managed to stand the test of time as it continues to be sampled by many artists.
Sorry for digressing from the topic. I ended up using the instrumental from the "S*icidal Thoughts" remix.


Next, regarding the proverb:
The proverb "When the last tree is cut down, the last fish eaten and the last stream poisoned, you will realize that you cannot eat money " originates from the words of Alanis Obomsawin, an Abenaki from the Odanak reserve in Quebec, during a conversation in 1972. Later, the proverb was used by other Native Americans, such as Sakokwenonkwas, during a lecture at Harvard University in 1972. It also appeared in Greenpeace publications in the 1980s. Although the exact origin of the proverb is not clear, Obomsawin is generally credited with formulating it.
I found a version of this proverb on YouTube with a flute background, and upon closer listening to the music in the TikToks and Instagram videos, I also noticed the presence of this flute background. So, it's the same version, and I decided to use it.

But why the images of The Lorax?
The proverb is associated with "The Lorax" due to its theme of environmental preservation. The Lorax is a children's book by Dr. Seuss that emphasizes the consequences of human greed on nature. Though not directly mentioned in the book, the proverb captures the spirit of "The Lorax" by highlighting the destructive outcomes of exploiting natural resources.



That's all for the research. Now, let me explain the fairly simple process of creating the video. First, I shortened the instrumental track by removing certain repetitive parts, as I felt that nearly three minutes of instrumental music without lyrics could seem lengthy with this particular track. Then, I added the proverb on top of the music at the same timing as in the TikTok version. Next, I searched for videos of people cutting trees or other things like that on YouTube and synced them with my music. And that's it, my video was created. Afterward, I used Chat GPT to help me translate the description because I speak French, and it's well-known that French people struggle with English.

What a lengthy explanation for such a simple video! :p
