Shuree-ryū is an American-born karate system that takes its name from Shuree, the old royal capital of Okinawa, yet it was assembled on the mainland United States by Robert A. Trias. He drew heavily on Okinawan Shuree-te methods and mixed them with Chinese ideas that he encountered in the Pacific during the Second World War. In practice that gave the style a recognizably Okinawan spine, but with Chinese inflections in hand shapes, stepping, and power delivery. Today it continues in the United States through organizations such as the International Shuree-Ryū Association and allied groups that grew out of the network Trias built.
The origin story begins in the Solomon Islands, where Trias was stationed with the United States Navy. There he met a small, persistent Chinese missionary named Tung Gee Hsing who asked to spar with the American boxer. The story that senior Shuree-ryū documents preserve is simple: when Trias finally agreed, Hsing’s skill shocked him, and that shock turned into study. Hsing taught him elements of xingyi-quan and a version of Okinawan Shuree-te that Hsing himself said he had studied under Motobu Chōki in Okinawa. Before the war ended Trias also trained with Hoy Yuan Ping in Singapore. The mix was unusual for that moment in time, and it matters because it explains why Shuree-ryū later felt familiar to Okinawan stylists yet not identical to any single Okinawan line.
