Anything that damages the liver over many years can lead the liver to form scar tissue. Fibrosis is the first stage of liver scarring, and may lead to cirrhosis. Dr. Richard Sterling, from VCU’s Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, discusses the causes and treatment options for liver fibrosis — including a new noninvasive technology, FibroScan, which makes the assessment of liver disease simpler without a biopsy.
