This past decade, India has managed to connect every household to the national grid. But what does this actually mean? In rural India, there is a real lack of reliable sources of energy for agricultural and commercial use.
In this video, shot by Urban Odyssey, Oorja's pay-per-use irrigation service Oonnati is seen in action. As they don't have access to electricity, the farmers of Uttar Pradesh in northern India previously used diesel pumps to irrigate their fields. These pumps are not environmentally friendly, bad for health and really expensive. In response, Oorja implemented solar pumps that farmers can use on-demand and only pay for water they consume. Farmers don't have to invest in the technology themselves and they can now irrigation more regularly, diversify their cropping systems, grow additional crops and increase their income.
