Follow my family's journey as we cook a recipe each month from Edna Lewis's influential cookbooks. Edna Lewis grew up in Freetown, Virginia, a community established by freed enslaved people. Lewis grew up on a farm and lived in a community whose connection centered on togetherness and food. Her cookbooks read like historical narratives, weaving in recipes and wisdom that is warm and intuitive. When so much of our cooking culture celebrates those who are "pioneers" in slow and local cooking, we all too often forget our Black trailblazers.This year-long project will dive deep in to the spirit of Edna Lewis, her love for seasonal cooking and honoring the tradition of eating where you live.
This month, we're making biscuits from Edna's cookbook, The Taste of Country Cooking. We'll add the recipe here soon, but in the meantime, New York Times has a nice recipe online you can follow. Simply search "Edna Lewis biscuits" and you'll be all set.
