The U.S. Navy tests a weapon system aboard its most advanced aircraft carrier, it is never just a routine event. It is a signal. A signal of readiness, of technological maturity, and of strategic intent. Recently, the USS Gerald R. Ford conducted a live demonstration of its integrated defensive weapons suite during Combat Systems Ship Qualification Trials, better known as CSSQT.
The Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile is a medium-range, surface-to-air missile specifically designed to intercept anti-ship cruise missiles, aircraft, and other aerial threats. It is an evolution of earlier Sea Sparrow systems, enhanced with improved maneuverability, guidance, and range. On a platform like USS Gerald R. Ford, ESSM acts as a critical middle layer of defense — engaging threats that have penetrated outer defensive screens provided by escorting destroyers.
Closer in, the Rolling Airframe Missile provides short-range point defense. RAM is built for speed and rapid response. It uses passive radio frequency and infrared homing to lock onto incoming missiles in their terminal phase. In simple terms, it is designed to react in seconds when an incoming threat is just moments away from impact. During CSSQT, the successful launch and tracking of these missiles demonstrated that Ford’s defensive network is fully integrated and operational.
