Stepping into Huangpu Village, you'll encounter the iconic Fengpu Archway, harking back to a time when the village was known as Fengpu. Legend has it that a pair of phoenixes once graced this land, drawn by its pristine waters. The Cantonese locals, referring to the land by the water as "Pu," bestowed the name Fengpu Village. Over time, foreign traders altered the pronunciation to "Huangpu," giving rise to the village's modern moniker.

As early as the Southern Song Dynasty (1127–1279), Huangpu Ancient Port emerged as a hub for international merchant ships. The Ming and Qing Dynasties witnessed Guangzhou's ascent as a pivotal foreign trade port, marking the zenith of Huangpu Ancient Port's glory.

During this golden era, foreign vessels had to declare their goods at Huangpu Ancient Port before engaging in trade with China. Historical records indicate that more than 5000 foreign merchant ships docked at the port during the period when Guangzhou held the exclusive privilege of foreign trade. The illustrious "East Indiaman Gotheborg," a renowned Swedish merchant ship, made three visits to Huangpu Ancient Port, laden with silks, tea, porcelain, and other coveted goods.

Today, as you wander through the historic streets of Ancient Huangpu Village, echoes of its glorious past resonate. Not far away, the Guangzhou International Convention and Exhibition Center (Pazhou Complex) stands as a modern testament, inheriting the prosperity and openness of the ancient port. During the Canton Fair, Chinese and foreign merchants converge here, continuing the legacy of the Maritime Silk Road and perpetuating the grandeur of Huangpu's maritime history.
