First Light

There was a time - a long time - after what we call The Big Bang when the Universe was dark. Inflation was going on at a rapid pace but all of this was happening in total blackness, save perhaps for the hazy, scattered pinpricks we know as The Cosmic Microwave Background. If this “light” was indeed visible at all, it can’t have been much to write home about. The Universe was, to all intents and purposes, dark.

About 250-300 million years later sufficient stuff (at this point just hydrogen and helium) had clumped together enough to form dense masses which began to collapse into themselves, under gravity. These atoms fused together, forming a superheated plasma which began to expand. Gravity did its best but in time became unable to constrict the outward pressure of all this stuff. And thus were born the first stars…

… and The First Light.
