Of all our military-inspired coats, the N1 deck jacket is the cut most commonly associated with Iron Heart. Originally designed by the U.S. Navy’s Clothing Board in the early 1940s, this beast was built to withstand the harsh conditions facing sailors in the North Atlantic. With features including a thick wool lining for insulation, a storm flap placket and knitted cuffs to keep out drafts, the N1 was about as heavy-duty as jackets come.

As the old saying goes, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, so our update of the classic N1 remains very faithful to the original design. The major upgrades we’ve made go largely unseen, including a hidden interlining through the body and collar to improve wind resistance, and an over-spec’d zipper beneath the buttoned placket for modern versatility. As with previous seasons, our N1 is available for FW24 in oiled and non-oiled whipcord models, with new colourways including brown and army green.

While the N1 ruled the waves during World War II, the following decade saw a new breed of deck jacket emerge. Generally considered the natural successor to the N1, the A2 cut actually bears more resemblance to the USAF flight jacket of the same name. Utilising lighter, more efficient modern materials, the A2’s design incorporated tried and tested features from both the N1 and the flight jacket from which it was adapted.

The result was a more agile, functional deck jacket which still offered the level of protection required for naval life at sea.We first introduced our take on the A2 as part of last year’s fall/winter collection, and it returns this season in hardwearing military serge and oiled whipcord versions. Similarly to the N1, we haven’t strayed far from the original specifications, with key features including a 100% wool lining, hidden storm cuffs and a snap-fastening breast pocket.
