Maastricht (Limburgs: Mestreech ) is een stad en gemeente in het zuiden van Nederland. Het is de hoofdstad van de provincieLimburg en telt 122.461 inwoners. Het is hiermee de grootste gemeente van de provincie Limburg.
De stad ligt aan de Maas. De herkomst van de naam Maastricht is waarschijnlijk terug te leiden tot de Latijnse naam Mosa Trajectum, "doorwaadbare plaats in de Maas", die uit de middeleeuwen bekend is.

The city is on the Maas. The origin of the name Maastricht can probably be traced back to the Latin name Mosa Trajectum, "ford in the Meuse", which is known from the Middle Ages.
