Longines has an important role in making chronographe for aviation since the early 20th century. The Charles Lindbergh or WWII pilot watches; or from the first monopusher to the first flyback; these are all significant achievements by Longines. In 2017, Longines released The Avigation BigEye chronograph that has been modelled after an early-1970s watch made for military aviators. The oversized minute counter, explaining its name “BigEye”.
In the video, I mentioned about the 3 minutes markings on the chronograph minute register (as oppose to the more popular 5 minutes markings); here is what I have discovered.

Pilots used to mark their navigation charts for projected future times along their track by DR (dead reckoning) or EP (estimated positions) calculation, in time intervals that were simple multiples or fractions of six minutes. The reason for using a 6 minutes is because it is 1/10th of an hour. If the vessel is doing 15 knots (15 nautical miles per hour), in 6 minutes it will do 1.5 nautical miles. Depending on the scale of the chart in use, pilot might want to mark the chart every 3 minutes, or every 12 minutes. Similarly, pilots aim to fix their position at 6 minute (or 3 or 12 minute) intervals, allowing them to quickly calculate the speed - as being 10 times (or 20 times or 5 times) the distance covered between adjacent fixes. It is an important aid and feature to those pilots wearing these aviation watches.

The Bigeye Chrono from 2017 was made in stainless steel, at 41mm.
Using the Longines Calibre L688 which is based on the 7750 with heavy modifications. Automatic winding with column wheel, power reserve at 54hours.
The watch was the 2017 GPHG the Revival Prize winner. At the time, that watch was priced at 2,530.00€
Just a few months ago, a new edition was launched – the Longines Avigation BigEye Titanium (2021). This new edition of the BigEye received an update with a grade 5 titanium case, remaining the same at 41mm. Movement has the upgraded Longines Calibre L688 but incorporating a silicon hairspring, making it much more resilient to magnetism.
Power reserve is 54hours.

Priced at 3,230.00€

With its rich history, technical advantages and price, this is one of the most interesting chronograph available on the market.
