The previous quarter provided an overview of the amazing capabilities and possibilities the electronic or digital media in today’s technology-driven world. These have enabled
innovative art forms to evolve outside of the traditional painting, sculpture, and
architecture.
In this quarter, the media-based arts and other forms will be explored. Most notably
the talent, creativity, and quality workmanship of Filipino artists and designers in all fields
will be recognized.
MEDIA-BASED ARTS AND DESIGN IN THE PHILIPPINES. The media-based art and design trends are photography, film, print media, digital media, and product and industrial design. (also called applied arts).
1. PHOTOGRAPHY – means to express themselves, to explore colors and lights, and to change the way they produce and look at images. It was viewed as a purely technical process that records visible images by light action on light-sensitive materials. Characterized as:
A. Self-expression – expresses feelings and manipulates reality to create
subjective atmosphere.
B. Documentation – capture our favorite memory or document our
traditions
C. Communication – it can speak to elicit an emotion from its viewers
from they think, feel through a picture
Notable photographers in the Philippines :
GEORGE TAPAN an award-winning travel photographer who
has won two Pacific Asia Tourism Association (PATA) Gold
awards, and first place in 2011 National Geographic Photo
Contest. 5
JOHN K. CHUA is best known as an advertising and commercial photographer with over 40 years of experience. He applied his
photo artistry to showcase the beauty of the Philippines.
2. FILM – another art form that has risen to tremendous heights within the last century is film or cinema. As it’s the early name “motion picture” declared
film brought into play-that of moving images.
Technical characteristics:
A. Directing – works with ideas, images, sounds, and other effects to create
this unique piece of art
B. Acting – first and foremost there was the art of acting.
C. Cinematography – behind the scenes or the art of film camera work
D. Editing – the art of selecting the precise section of the film
E. Production – this refers to location,lighting & costumes/props
Philippine Filmmakers are:
Laurece Guillen an outstanding female director. Salome 1981 earned
internationa acclaim at the Toronto International Film Festival. Tanging
Yaman 2001 won Best Picture in the MMFF.
Maryo J. Delos Reyes acclaimed film and television director, known for
movies such as Bagets(1984); Magnifico(2003) and Annie
Batungbakal(1979).
Marilou Diaz Abaya captured the attention and respect of the viewing
public with powerful films such as Jose Rizal(1998); Muro-Ami(1999);
and Bagong Buwan(2001).
Brillante Mendoza another Filipino who brought the country to the
World’s Cinema started directing films in 2005. But in just four years, his
film ‘Kinatay’ won him the BestDirector award at the prestigious
Cannes Film Festival of 2009.
3. ANIMATION a whole new career opportunity for creative Filipinos via the
field of animation has emerged. The Phil. Animation Studio Inc. (PASI) was
established 1991 and collaborated on a series with foreign projects. Some
of our very Filipino animation were:
Urduja (2008) an animated film adaptation of the legend of the
warrior Princess of Pangasinan.
Dayo: Sa Mundo Ng Elementalia (2008) one of the first locally
produced 3D animated film in the Philippines.
4. Print Media one major field that still relies heavily on print media is
advertising. Characterized by script writer/story teller; layout renderer, ink
renderer; colorist; and letter renderer. 6
Example:
Comic Books or Komiks as they are referred to locality. The
popularity of Philippine comics began in the 1920s’. Started as
weekly strips in local magazines like Liwayway and is translated into
different regional dialects.
5. Digital Media this means that books were originally available only in print
but are now being gradually converted to digital format and readers can
now find, access, and enjoy these electronic books (ebooks) via digital
media tablets, ebook readers, and other handheld reading devices.
6. Innovation in Product and Industrial Designs the product and industrial
designs as applied to furniture, lighting, and interior accessories.
Kenneth Cobonpue is a multi-awarded designer of
interior accessories and lighting in Hollywood.
Monique Lhuillier from Cebu City, Filipina fashion designer
and one of the darlings of the Hollywood celebrity set.
Rajo Laurel a much admired Filipino fashion designer with a
number of national and international awards to his name.
