I purchased my mid century Slant Board because I wanted to be able to do some of the exercises Joseph Pilates archived on the Bench Mat on an incline. But I also love practicing the exercises Dr. Bernard Jensen specifically designed for the Slant Board because they tie in so well with Joe’s exercises. The first variation in this video is obviously like a Pilates Roll Up. The body gets a feeling of extra length at the bottom of each repetition when done with the feet at the top of a slope. The second variation, with the hands cupping the elbows, reminds me of the Round Back in the Short Box Series as taught by Romana Kryzanowska's daughter Sari Mejia Santo. I love that I can pull down on my elbows while rolling up to help keep tension out of my shoulders.
After filming this mid century Slant Board exercise, Pilates historian Jonathan Grubb, shared an archival photo of Joe sitting on the sloped Bench Mat with his feet apart, toes flexed under the dowels at the top of the slope, body folded over the legs with the head toward the mat, and hands holding the sides of the Bench. Jonathan says the photo of Joe was taken sometime between 1936 and 1939 and was shared with the permission of Joe’s great niece, Marsha Brady. (Check it out on Jonathan's Facebook Group at "Joseph's Legacy - Pilates 100+".) This is a wonderful find because prior to Jonathan sharing Marsha’s photo, I had only seen the Five-Minute Rest and the Neck Pull documented on the inclined Bench Mat, yet I was sure Joe taught more exercises on the incline.
