Protecting Kids Without Sacrificing Privacy
As a parent of four, I’m all in on protecting kids from online dangers. New laws are rolling out globally to enforce age verification for adult content. But these rules spark privacy worries. Let’s unpack how they work and why they’re needed.
Picture the internet as a massive library where adult content sits on open shelves. Kids, even as young as 8, can stumble across it—2025 research found 8% of UK kids aged 8-14 visited porn sites in a month. That’s why proactive age verification is sweeping in. The UK’s Online Safety Act, enforced since July 2025, mandates “highly effective” age checks for porn sites.
The U.S. is following, with 24 states like Texas and Louisiana requiring ID checks or third-party verification for sites hosting adult content.
A 2024 Texas case saw Pornhub block access rather than comply, citing privacy risks, after traffic dropped 80% in Louisiana following implementation of age verification.
How do these checks work? Ofcom lists seven methods: facial age estimation via selfies, photo ID uploads, credit card checks, digital ID wallets, email analysis, mobile network checks, and bank account verification. For example, Yoti’s AI scans faces to estimate age, while Verifymy uses email history to confirm if you’re over 18. A French system uses a digital intermediary to verify age without linking it to the site visited. But here’s the catch: uploading IDs or selfies creates a data honeypot. A 2024 breach exposed driver’s licenses used for verification on TikTok and X.
X posts like @ChrisMid warn, “A hacked database could ruin lives!” The fear is that folks don’t want their personal details tied to their browsing habits. Though between tracking and fingerprinting, that horse may have already left the barn, but I digress.
Enter zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs), a promising fix. ZKPs let you prove you’re over 18 without revealing your ID or face. Think of it as showing a bartender a pass that says “adult” without handing over your driver’s license. ZKPs use cryptographic magic to verify age, sharing only a yes/no result. Still, they’re not foolproof, hackers could target verifiers, and VPNs let kids bypass checks or push them to shadier sites.
For parents, these laws are a win to shield kids from harmful content. But privacy concerns linger. All the while ZKPs offer hope, but until they’re widespread, we need robust, privacy-first solutions.
I’ve Put Together Three Takeaways and Next Steps:
1. Talk to Your Kids
Discuss online safety and why age checks exist. Use resources like Internet Matters to guide conversations about avoiding harmful content.
2. Use Parental Controls
Set up filters on devices via tools like Apple Screen Time or Google Family Link to block adult sites, complementing age verification laws.
3. Monitor Device Usage
Check kids’ browsing history and use apps like Bark to flag adult content access attempts.
